Description
This book is a multi-genre collection of critical essays, reviews, interviews, and heartfelt
reflections on the life and work of the academic and creative writer, Dr. Adedoyin Aguoru, of the
University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Aguoru’s remarkable profile is defined by her transnational and
transcontinental scholarship across theatrical, biographical and gender studies. The conversation
on contemporary comparative transnational studies which amongst other things re-ignited
Japanese studies in Africa today is clearly sustained in this book. Overall, this volume is a
symposium of established and fledgling scholars, mentors and mentees, university
administrators, poets, literary critics, captains of industries, diplomats, and an array of personalities
representative of Aguoru’s circle of influence and network. This book brings them together in
celebration of the golden birthday of a complex intellectual and humanist whose evolving career
is as intriguing as it is promising.

“A sumptuous feast of felicitation and critical engagement that unravels the humanity of Aguoru
and her humanistic explorations. And in celebrating Adedoyin Aguoru, we also inadvertently open
a (con)text that further extends the field of biocritical interventions and scholarship.”
— Adeshina Afolayan, author of Philosophy and National Development in Nigeria
“In this collection of essays, reviews, interviews, and tributes celebrating Adedoyin Aguoru’s 50th
birthday, individuals—most especially those for whom she is a Sensei in the true sense of the
word—document the intellectual and (s)heroic interventions as well as the institution-building that
define Dr. Aguoru’s contributions to knowledge and society.”
— Godwin R. Murunga, Executive Secretary, CODESRIA.
“From the moment I met Dr Doyin Aguoru a few years ago, she struck me as a remarkably
intelligent, efficient, gentle and quiet young woman, who, nevertheless, possessed a distinctive
inner strength…Her calm and dignified mien is unmistakable.”
— Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosumu, former Ambassador of Nigeria to The Netherlands
“In several of her writings, Dr. Aguoru consistently establishes herself as a profound intellectual…
Repeatedly, she demonstrates that her intellectual energies are inexhaustible, and it is not
impossible that the same energies can radiate glowingly, depending on how they are used.”
— Toyin Falola, the Jacob and Frances Sanger Mossiker Chair in the Humanities and Distinguished
Teaching professor at the University of Texas at Austin.
